However, we don’t like to let a good story go to waste, so here is a case study from Comau that didn’t appear in the Annual Report. In-field mobile robotics transforms solar farm construction
As the global push for renewable energy accelerates, future-focused energy companies are increasingly look to advanced technology to automate the complex, labour-intensive process of constructing large-scale solar farms. Traditional methods require significant manual labour and are subject to cost fluctuations and often face delays due to workforce constraints or unpredictable logistics.
In response to these challenges, EDP, a global leader in the renewable energy sector with an ambitious portfolio of solar projects around the world and a strong focus on innovation, tested Comau’s unique Hyperflex mobile robotic factory to automate the assembly and installation of photovoltaic (PV) panels in the field. Using advanced automation to build one of its photovoltaic solar parks under real-life installation conditions in this way was a first for EDP.
Comau’s Hyperflex mobile robotic factory, implemented at EDP’s solar park at Valladolid, Spain, demonstrated how Hyperflex, combined with Comau’s MATE-XT exoskeletons, enabled the automated construction of a 3MW section within a 122MW solar park, achieving faster installation, greater worker safety, and higher efficiency, with zero incidents and zero defects.
Combining robotics, AI and ergonomic innovation in this helps to redefine how large-scale renewable energy sites are built, setting a new benchmark for automated solar farm construction. Comau’s Hyperflex mobile robotic factory was also selected as a case study in the International Federation of Robotics’ World Robotics 2025 report.
