In-person TG Telerobotics and Teleoperation seminar in Geneva

Most Topic Group (TG) events are online. It’s a simple practicality. So when a physical, in-person event is planned, we take notice, especially when the venue is CERN, Europe’s renowned centre for nuclear research. Secretary General Reinhard Lafrenz made time in a relentlessly busy calendar to be there. Here’s what he made of it:
“One of the few physical TG meetings outside ERF took place in November at CERN in Geneva, CH. It was organised by the TG on Telerobotics and Teleoperation. The meeting highlighted a broad range of cross-cutting topics, with strong links to other TGs, various application domains, and challenging environments such as underwater and space robotics, as well as connections to AI.
A key message was the growing need for increased autonomous behaviour while keeping humans firmly in control in several application areas. Beyond the technical presentations, the meeting fostered lively discussions on research directions and on how the cooperation between TGs and the wider community can further evolve.
The programme also included lab tours at several CERN facilities. Of particular interest to the euRobotics community was an extended visit to the robotics lab, showcasing need-driven R&D for highly demanding application environments, operating under strict safety regulations while still allowing academic freedom to identify optimal solutions.
This meeting format, combining in-person exchange with cross-TG perspectives, could serve as a valuable model for future physical cross-TG meetings.”
What did the TF Telerobotics and Teleops Coordinators themselves think? We aim to find out in time for the January edition.
