Somewhere in the world, at national, local or institutional level, an election is taking place. In Europe, international media recently focused on presidential elections in France and Slovenia. Here at euRobotics we are not expecting to attract so much attention for our own Board elections! Nonetheless, the effective representation of our members, the rigour of the election process and the smooth functioning of our Board, are all very important for the governance of our association. And as we look ahead from this point in early May, election time is fast approaching.

Three important principles are built into the election process – fairness, renewal and continuity.

Fairness – all eligible, paid-up members of euRobotics can stand as a candidate in the election. All parts of the euRobotics membership are represented, based on different sub-categories of organisation within Industry and Research.

Renewal – each year, one third of Board positions – 8 of 24 – are vacant, and members have an opportunity both to stand for election and to express their choice between candidates by voting. In this way, the composition of the Board is renewed regularly, bringing fresh thinking and fresh personalities in order to maintain the Board’s vitality.

Continuity – while one third of Board positions are renewed, two thirds remain the same. This is simple arithmetic, but it also means that the Board is able to retain a level of experience and knowledge about governing the association, and about current activities and challenges. With this balance of renewal and continuity, the electoral mechanism provides stability, retains competence and builds experience, yet allows for change.

Full information about the election and who is standing for election this year will be mailed directly to members soon. Whoever is elected, we look forward to working with them.
